1Gate presents at the Conference on Preventing Smuggling, Trade Fraud, and Counterfeit Goods in Kien Giang

19/10/2023

On the morning of October 18, the Standing Office of the National Steering Committee 389 organized a conference in Kien Giang to discuss solutions for addressing smuggling and trade fraud related to tobacco and sugar products.

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Le Quoc Anh, Vice Chairman of the Kien Giang Provincial People’s Committee, stated that Kien Giang has a land border and a maritime area spanning over 63,000 km², with more than 143 islands, the largest of which is Phu Quoc. This geographical advantage facilitates economic trade with neighboring countries, but also presents significant risks of smuggling, trade fraud, and counterfeit goods—particularly through unauthorized cross-border and maritime transport.

In response, the Provincial Party Committee, People’s Committee, and Steering Committee 389 of Kien Giang have proactively developed and implemented action plans, thematic campaigns, and intensive operations to tackle these illegal activities.

As part of the workshop, 1Gate contributed to the discussion by presenting several technology-based solutions to help prevent and detect counterfeit products using RFID technology.

The core principle in anti-counterfeiting efforts is to assign a unique identifier (ID) to each product throughout its lifecycle—from manufacturing to reaching the end consumer. This unique ID is encoded onto an RFID chip embedded in the product’s label.

The information stored in each RFID chip is unique and immutable. It can be accessed and verified using various methods—such as RFID readers or ID-based lookup tools—and by multiple parties, including company supervisors, anti-counterfeiting authorities, and even end consumers.

Because the ID and its associated data are secure and unique, RFID-tagged labels are extremely difficult to forge. While a label might be physically copied, the data tied to the fake ID will not match, making counterfeit detection straightforward.

The problem of counterfeit goods is becoming more severe, with increasingly sophisticated and complex methods. This not only affects economic development but also undermines business competitiveness and consumer trust. RFID technology offers a powerful new tool in the effort to fight against counterfeiting—providing major advantages over traditional solutions like laser or 3D labels, including uniqueness, security, authenticity, and ease of verification.
